Closing the skills gap is a challenge for any manufacturer and particularly so for Uponor North America, Apple Valley, MN (uponor-usa.com). Uponor is in a strong growth mode that has involved expanding existing manufacturing to capacity and rapidly equipping an existing building in a nearby town to keep up with product demand. Their biggest hurdle is finding skilled workers.

The company has tackled immediate and future needs by making their manufacturing environment inviting and accessible to women, developing an apprenticeship program, and working with local high schools to expose students to manufacturing careers through education and summer internships/jobs. In this podcast, Bill Gray, president, Uponor North America, talks with Efficient Plant editorial director Gary L. Parr, about the culture changes and programs they’ve established to to develop an ongoing supply of skilled workers.
