The advent of wireless sensor networks was a big deal about 8 years ago as the WirelessHART and ISA standards were introduced, and automation vendors began to roll out applications to different industries. Before the introduction of these protocols, SensorOnline.com reported $526 million in revenue for wireless sensors in 2009, but the market reached $1.20 billion by 2014.

Part of the reason for the explosive growth lies with continuous process applications that benefit from eliminating cable and their related engineering activities across large footprints, such as oil and gas, water and wastewater. This video from Vopak Vlissingen Sensors highlights an installation of a wirelessHART sensor network that centers around heat exchangers in this continuous application.
