Volvo Cars said last month it intends to build a new manufacturing facility in the U.S. The Sweden-based automaker has not announced a location, but said it has a short list of potential locations, and will announce details regarding factory location, size and investment soon.
The move will give Volvo a global industrial footprint, with factories on three continents—Europe, China and North America. The company said it is also part of a transformation plan that involves the complete renewal of Volvo’s product range over the next four years, the introduction of a new modular vehicle technology, and other developments involving safety, design and connectivity services.
In other company news, Volvo announced in its recently released 2014 Sustainability Report that it reduced the total lifetime CO2 emissions of its products by 40 million tons against a 2008 baseline, beating its goal by 10 million tons. The company also exceeded its target to reduce CO2 emissions from its production plants by 0.2 million tons (12%), compared to 2008, instead achieving a 20% (0.4 million ton) reduction by the end of last year.
In 2014, the company also achieved ISO 14001 (environmental-management) certification for 98% percent of its major production plants, and ensured that more than 94% of its automotive-products suppliers are similarly certified.
